H.L. Mencken? In a Christian blog? While Mencken had some choice words for Christians (my personal favorite being: “Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.”), he also had some profundities that I think are invaluable for a Christian honestly invested in Liberty.

“The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one’s time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.”

This seems, to me, to be an especially hard concept for a Faith that recognizes personal morality and virtue to be of the utmost concern. However, Mencken nails the result of not defending freedom that we should all be concern with, and with little trouble can see the erosion of freedom with the increase of morality based laws. This is not a call for hedonism, which is the primary fear tactic waged against liberty, from a puritanical perspective. This is an important concept for anyone lobbying for legislation against those you find reprehensible.
