You’ve heard it all before from Christian Americanism: America is the City On The Hill, We are a Chosen Nation, er.. Israel is the Chosen Nation, This or that natural disaster is God’s judgement on our nation, and if we would repent God will heal our Nation. etc. etc.

By Christian Americanism, I mean Statist and Nationalist tendencies of the average American Christian. While it isn’t an official doctrine, I’m sure the majority of readers can quickly list several identifying features; namely, all this Nationalism for the United States of America and the Nation of Israel. This will not be an exhaustive critique of the Nations mentioned in the bible, nor will it be an alphabetized list of every verse that has the word Nation in it. What we will be doing is examining a few verses to hold against the Religious Nationalism polluting doctrine in the Church today.

During a lengthy message of comfort to God’s people, Isaiah [40:15]-17 shows us God’s feelings towards man’s Nations,

19657329_1934288796849652_1059158923571617474_n15 Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket,
and are accounted as the dust on the scales;
behold, he takes up the coastlands like fine dust.
16 Lebanon would not suffice for fuel,
nor are its beasts enough for a burnt offering.
17 All the nations are as nothing before him, they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness.

Ok, that’s a concise picure of God’s feelings about man’s Nations, but there was a Nation of Israel in the Bible. Right? He did make a Nation, Right? What was that Old Testament Nation stuff about?

Peter, in 1 Peter 2:9 informs Christians,

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

And there it is: What, or who is the Nation God is concerned with? What, or who, is the Nation we should be concerned with? What, or who, does the Old Testament Nation of Israel point to?
